SPECTRE Crockett and Jones Norwich

In SPECTRE, Bond’s dress shoe of choice was the Crockett and Jones Norwich in full grain black calf leather. He actually uses these shoes multiple times in the film: during the pre-title sequence set in Mexico City, in some of the earlier scenes in London, and for his visit to Oberhauser’s hide-out in Morocco.

To be honest, the Norwich is a slightly odd choice for a more formal shoe. Most traditionalists would agree that an Oxford, with its closed lacing, would be more appropriate for wearing with a suit. But this model’s sleek lines, minimalist detailing and chisel toe give the shoe a more formal look than your typical Gibson. Call me crazy, but the Norwich reminds me a shark: all business, no fuss. Which makes it damn near perfect for Craig’s Bond.

For Bond fans, one of the benefits of 007 wearing Crockett & Jones is that they don’t tend to mess around too much with their timeless styles. So we can still pick up a pair of their Norwich model if we’re willing to shell out the $500. Full grain calf uppers with a Dainite rubber sole.

Gagliardi Black Leather Formal Shoes129.00/£125.00 (approximately $160.00)

These aren’t the cheapest alternatives. But Gagliardi’s model comes very close to the styling of the Norwich, with a slightly rounder toe. And in the past, they’ve produce some excellent quality shoes at very reasonable prices. It’s hard to tell from the product page, but I think these ones also use a leather sole with a rubber heel. So maybe not the best for wet weather. However, what really gives these the edge is Gagliardi’s free worldwide shipping program. That can save you $10 to $20 alone.

Marks & Spencer Airflex Leather Cap Toe Derby Shoes: £59.00/$83.00

We won’t fool ourselves into thinking we’re going get the best quality leather. But if you’re willing to go with a boxier toe and 4 eyelet lacing, they’ll get the job done. They also use an Airflex rubber sole, so they’ll handle puddles a little better. And M&S has used leather that is certified to meet LWG standards, which means the production  had a lower impact on the environment. That’s also a good thing. UK sizes 6 to 12 are available on their website.

Florsheim Montinaro Cap Toe Oxford in Black Smooth: on sale for $79.99
affordable alternatives SPECTRE Crockett and Jones Norwich
Basically the U.S. version of the M&S alternative. Again we have a more rounded toe box and 4 eyelet lacing. Plus, there’s that extra stitching around the heel and the use of a light-brown synthetic sole. However, if you’re on a budget but still want a decent quality alternative at a good price (which exactly what most of us are looking for), these will do the trick.

Aldo Galerrang in Black: $120.00/£90.00
affordable alternatives SPECTRE Crockett and Jones Norwich
A black leather cap toe with a rubber sole and chisel shape toe? The Galerrang pretty much checks all those boxes. So why aren’t they the “Best Option”? Because the reviews are all over the place. Some customers have been more than satisfied with these shoes. Others have had issues ranging from the fit to the quality of the leather. If you keep your expectations realistic, these could be an excellent alternative.

Florsheim Lawrence in Black: $160.00
affordable alternatives SPECTRE Crockett and Jones Norwich
Part of Florsheim’s higher-end Imperial line, the Lawrence is a 5 eyelet oxford with a full leather liner and leather soles. The upper is full grain calf skin, but the style does have a more squared off toe box shape. If you’re looking for something at a lower price point, you could try Florsheim’s Sabato Cap Ox for $130.00. It’s a 4 eyelet model, but the shape is actually a little sleeker. The trade-off is a slightly lower quality leather and construction.

Massimo Matteo 5-eye Cap Toe: $165.00
affordable alternatives SPECTRE Crockett and Jones Norwich
In terms of styling, the Massimo Matteos come very close to the Norwich. The toe is a little more pointed than chiseled, and the sole is leather with a half-rubber heel. But they’re also made in Italy and the most of the reviews state they are much nicer than the product page photos would lead you to believe. Sizes 7 to 14 in both D and E (wide) widths are available at Zappos.

Herring Burlington Derby Shoe in Black: on sale for £168.75/$172.00
affordable alternatives SPECTRE Crockett and Jones Norwich
For about $6 more, those of you in the U.S. can step up from the Massimo Matteos to this alternative from Herrings. What does that extra six bucks buy you? A full grain calf leather upper with a full leather lining and a Goodyear Welted leather sole. And they’re made in England. The only problem is the available sizing. As I’m writing this, Herring is down to a UK 10.5 and 11. But if you’re either of thosesizes, these are ones you’re going to want to jump on fast!
