Casino Royale PTS Black Cardigan

Updated February 10th, 2017 – As far as I can tell, the maker of the original black cardigan worn by James Bond in the pre-title sequence of Casino Royale still hasn’t been 100% confirmed (Gant? Ralph Lauren?). What we do know is that Bond wore the cardigan under his peacoat and the scenes were in black and white. So the details of the whole piece are next to impossible to discern from the film alone.

Some have speculated that the cardigan Daniel Craig wears in the photo below from the Infamous premiere (sourced from JustJared) is the same one used in the film, based on the collar’s height and ribbing and the buttons.

Sounds logical enough to me! I’ll base the affordable alternatives on that theory.

Features wanted for the Casino Royale PTS Black Cardigan
  • Five button cardigan in black
  • High collar … a reeaally high collar
  • Heavy gauge ribbing on hem, cuffs and collar
  • Big patch pockets with ribbed trim

Best Option for the Casino Royale PTS Black Cardigan

Azbro High Neck Button Front Knit Sweater: $27.07

This suggestion came from AJB007 forum member Cajun. It’s 100% acrylic. No surprise given the price. And it does button all the way to the top. But it probably has the highest collar I’ve seen with the most recent options. And the rest of the styling will give you the look you want.

Under $100
Miedeon Button Front Slim Fit Cardigan in Black: $27.99

I can almost guarantee you that this option is exactly the same as the Azbro above. Except Miedeon is claiming their version is 100% cotton. There are several FBA companies on Amazon that are offering this cardigan. So take your pick. You’ve got K.ONE for $17.49 to $30.00 which is stated as a cotton blend,  Comfy for $26.32 which also is stated as a cotton blend, Benibos for $18.79 to $29.99 with no info giving about the material, and TargetMountain for $22.36 to $29.95 which claims to be a wool blend. Take all those statements about the fabric with a grain of salt. And make sure you check the sizing and reviews!

Luciano Natazzi Cotton Mock Neck Cardigan in Black$39.99 to $59.95

If you can forgive the shorter collar and the more “up and down” angle of the pockets, this one is a pretty good match. The body of the cardigan is a flat knit, and it has the ribbing around the collar, hem and pocket seams. Unfortunately, the sleeves are also a full ribbed knit. But you’re going to be wearing it under a peacoat, right? 100% cotton according to the description on Amazon and all sizes are in stock.

Saks 5th Avenue Button-Front Cashmere Cardigan in Black: on sale for $69.99 to $74.98

A nice option from Saks 5th Avenue. It doesn’t have the super high funnel neck of the screen used cardigan. But what affordable alternative does these days? And under $100 for a 100% cashmere cardigan is a pretty good deal. Especially when the original price was $250.00. Sizes small to XXL are in stock at Saks Off 5th.

The Investment piece

I should also add that Magnoli Clothiers has the replica Royale Cardigan, made to measure in 100% merino wool, for $350.00.

I’ll keep adding other alternatives as I find them. And with fall just around the corner we should start seeing some more options. If you’ve found a cardigan you think is a good match, share it in the comments below!

The azbro link is broken. For the high collar cardigan.

Thanks! I haven’t updated this post in a while so most of the links will be old. Hope to get it done in December!
