Updated August 20th, 2016 – After enjoying death for a spell in Skyfall, Bond’s first mission is in Shanghai, where he wears the grey Acne Studios Wall Street Shark trousers with his Billy Reid Pea Coat and Crockett and Jones Tetbury boots.
According to The Bond Experience, it was AJB007 member Meesta Bawnd that first identified the pants as being from Acne Studios, which originally retailed for €220.00. Matt Spaiser at The Suits of James Bond once again lends his expertise to the analysis of the complete Shanghai outfit, while James Bond Lifestyle offers more details on the pants themselves, including the close-up shots of the fabric detail used below.
Features Wanted for the Acne Studios Wall Street Shark trousers
- Slim trousers in a mid-grey sharkskin fabric
- Extended waist band closure
- Side adjuster tabs (buttons if possible)
- Note: Actually sharkskin trousers are not all that common at a reasonable price, so I’ve included some alternatives that use fabrics that come close in sheen, color and weave to give us more options.
These things used to retail for $225.00. At that price, I wasn’t really sure they were worth a look. Now that they’re under $100? Well, they’re 100% Italian wool, made in the U.S.A., and listed as an “Extreme Slim Fit”. And the color comes very close to the Acne’s. All of that is sounding pretty good. Sold at Men’s Wearhouse and all sizes are in stock.
Kohl’s Apt. 9 Slim-Fit Sharkskin Stretch Dress Pants: on sale for $32.99
This option from Kohl’s house brand Apt. 9 are a true sharkskin fabric and they still have a great selection of sizes in stock. Slim-fit or not, judging by the pics of the model the hem on these is pretty wide. So you’ll probably want to visit a tailor to get them tapered.
Adolfo Slim-fit Flat-front Gray Sharkskin Suit Pants: on sale for $48.00
Another option from Kohl’s. No wool to be seen in these. Instead the fabric is a rayon/poly “Microtech” fabric. Like the Apt. 9 alternatives above, you’ll likely want to get these tailored for a true slim fit. All sizes are in stock.
The 60% polyester/40% wool fabric of the Esprit trousers isn’t a true sharkskin and they’re lacking the details up top. But the wool/poly blend gives them a bit of sheen, and the fabric color and slim fit are a good match for the Wall Streets. All sizes are in stock.
Jaeger Wool Sharkskin Modern Suit Trousers in Grey: on sale for £59.00
This are on sale at Jaeger (down from £119.00) and they still have a decent range of sizes left. Fabric is 100% Italian wool in a true sharkskin weave. They may need a bit of tailoring, but finding this quality at this price is pretty rare. Especially when the fabric weave and color comes so close to the originals. Those of you in the U.S. can find them at the John Lewis U.S. site for $79.00.
J.Crew Factory Bedford Slim Pant in Medium Charcoal: on sale for $82.50
JCF still has a good selection of sizes left in their slim-fit Bedford style. Again, not a true sharkskin, but more of a heathered wool effect.
The Express Slim Innovator Micro Twill Gray Suit Pants have more of a contrasting weave to match the look of the Acne trousers. And they look like a true slim fit. Fabric is a wool/polyester/nylon blend (no mention of the actual ratios) and almost all sizes are in stock.
A new alternative from Charles Tyrwhitt. The color is darker than the Acne’s. But they are a true 100% wool sharkskin in a slim fit. They currently have all sizes in stock.
