James Bond and Hawaiian shirts. I’m sure an argument can be made that Brosnan’s blue floral print in Die Another Day’s Cuba scenes was a personal style choice. But I’m going to stick by my theory that the Casino Royale Madagascar shirt was simply part of Bond’s disguise. Nevertheless, the shirt does have a certain appeal. While the pattern is definitely “Aloha”, the colors used are toned down and not too in-your-face. It’s the serious man’s Hawaiian shirt, and when worn with the grey t-shirt, moss green linen pants and Converse Jack Purcell OTRs, the overall effect is less “frat-boy on spring break” and more “low profile secret agent”.
Features Wanted for the Casino Royale Madagascar Shirt
- Short sleeve, button front shirt with spread collar
- Abstract floral print pattern in red, light grey and beige
Obviously, since the shirt was custom made for the movie, we’re not going to find an alternative with exactly the same pattern. So we need to focus more on the colors used and the general look and feel of the shirt. Unless, of course, we go with ….
Magnoli Clothiers’ Madagascar Shirt is priced at $165.00, but it’s about as close as you’re going to get to the original and each one is made-to-measure.
Best Option for the Casino Royale Madagascar Shirt
Matrix Tropic Woven Shirt in Natural: on sale for $37.46
Head on over to Backcountry and check out the Matix Tropic Woven Shirt in Natural. The pattern is “splotchier” (word?) than the Casino Royale version, but the balance between the colors and overall look and feel are pretty close. They only have sizes large and XL left.
Options Under $50
Going from least to most expensive, we start with a very low budget option on Amazon: the Generic Easy Care Button Up Holiday Shirt for $10.60. No grey in the pattern, but the deep red floral motif is a little more abstract than your typical Hawaiian shirt. For the price, this one may be a good choice if you want to experiment with color fading techniques. It’s coming to ya from China, so pay attention to the sizing information! And if this one isn’t doing it for you, there are some variations of the shirt here and here.
DC Shoe Co Floral Button-Down Shirt: on sale for $20.00
The description says this is a button-down collar, but the picture definitely makes it look like a spread. The green/grey used in the pattern is a little darker and more prominent than the original, and the “red” leans more to orange, but overall it’s not bad, especially at that price.
Tasso Elba Tropical Plaid Short-sleeve Shirt: on sale for $26.99
The shirt goes with a deeper brown leaf pattern, with the red accents coming from the lines that form the plaid. In other words, even though the pattern isn’t a great match, the shirt does have a similar “vibe” to the original. Available at Macy’s and all sizes are in stock.
Obviously a much subtler pattern than the original, but that may appeal to some of you. Fabric is 55% linen/45% cotton and all sizes are available.
Options Under $100
Back to Amazon for the Caribbean Joe Short Sleeve Leaf Pattern Rayon Shirt in Plumberry, priced at $50.00. There’s no denying it: while the colors used come close to the Madagascar shirt, the pattern is waaay busier. The option to choose if you’re more on the “wild and crazy” side.
Cremieux Short Sleeve Paisley Woven Shirt: on sale for $27.82
And now moving again to the “subtle” end of the pattern spectrum. We lose the red in the pattern, but the curly-cues over the pinstripes give the shirt some visual interest while staying on the more conservative side.
