“Best Budget Bond Finds” shares the top discoveries from the previous month. Some of these will have already been included in past posts and are deserving of another mention, some will be great alternatives found by the intrepid community, and some are just odds and ends that don’t currently have a home.
So obviously the big news out of November were the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales at the end of the month. I hope you scored some good deals! But aside from those, we were still able to find some interesting alternatives in the lesser known corners of the internet.
Best affordable bet for that Skyfall finale look ….
Vedoneire Vintage Wax Blazer: £129.95 (approximately $160.00)
It’s already been mentioned in our post on Barbour X To Ki To alternatives. But just in case you haven’t seen it, I’m sharing it again. Vedoneire’s option is a 50% cotton/50% blend fabric. And it really nails so many of the Barbour’s design details. If you’re in the States, ordering from Vedoneire is no problem. I did it when I ordered another jacket from them and paid no extra taxes or duties. Sizes medium to 3XL are available on their website. My experience has been their fits are slim but true to size. And sign up for their newsletter! You immediately get a 15% discount on your purchase, bringing the price down to about £110.00.
OHMSS inspired outerwear
Not an exact match for the pullover Lazenby wore to raid Piz Gloria. But it certainly captures that jacket’s spirit! I found out about Wayside Flower through The Grey Fox Blog (a great site for mature men’s style; check it out!). Their made-in-the-UK anorak uses 320gsm, 100% cotton Panama Canvas. Details include real horn buttons, brass zippers and eyelets and French seam construction. They also describe it as a “slim fit”. So if you want to layer underneath, think about sizing up. Shipping in the UK is free. But Wayside Flower will ship anywhere in the world for £15.o0. This one is on my Wish List! You can find more anorak options in this post.
What time is it!
Seiko 5 Automatic SNZH57: $147.38
Over at AJB007, forum member James Boldman suggested the SNZH57J1 version of this watch as an affordable alternative for the SPECTRE Omega Seamaster 300. And what’s the main difference between this one and the J1 model? The J1 is manufactured in Japan, has white lettering at the bottom of the dial, and costs $189.50. Seiko makes this one in Malaysia and it has gold lettering at the bottom of the dial. Both are 43mm, with a Hardlex mineral crystal and exhibition case-backs. And as far as I can tell, both use Seiko’s 23-jewel automatic movement. I’ll leave it to you to decide if the extra forty bucks is worth it.
And to keep your watch from falling off your wrist …. AJB007 forum members Leflerj and Tennyson have been busy praising this PhenomeNATO strap. It ain’t the cheapest option. But both gentlemen have been very happy with their purchases, claiming if comes close to the look of the $200+ Omega NATO. We’ll have a review of the PhenomeNATO coming up soon.
Deep discount on alternatives for the SPECTRE poster trousers
Burton Menswear London Black and White Tappered Slim Fit Trouser: on sale for £15.00
These have been the “Best Option” in our Neil Barrett alternatives post for a while. Now that they’re on sale for £15, they’re an even better deal. The pattern isn’t an exact match. But the 72% cotton, 13% viscose, 12% polyester, 3% elastane blend fabric and slim cut will definitely give you the London finale look. AJB007 forum member Chriscoop picked up a pair, and seems pretty pleased with them. The catch? Sizes on the Burton website are getting very low!
Enjoying a little bit of death ….
Calvin Klein Jeans Light Indigo Chopstick Print Shirt: $19.03 to $55.99
The color comes close to the Zara shirt used in Skyfall. But the pattern is obviously busier. And the angled chest pockets aren’t quite accurate. Still, good alternatives for the Enjoying Death shirt are hard to find. This one comes closer than most. Available at Amazon U.S.; size medium is out of stock. You can find more options for the shirt in this post.
Calvin Klein Cool Tech Long Sleeve Shirt in Palace Blue: $34.41 to $79.50
In the comments for the Enjoying Death shirt post, TH suggested this alternative, again from Calvin Klein. Fabric is 100% cotton, so I’m not sure where the “Cool Tech” comes in. Description says something about “moisture absorbing technology”. Maybe some type of a fabric treatment? Style-wise, it is closer to the Zara shirt than the previous option. But you may need to beat on it to get that worn and faded look. Amazon U.S. has sizes medium and large available.
Alternative for Brunello Cucinelli SPECTRE belt
Zara Reversible Belt in Brown: $39.90
AJB007 forum member PPK recommended this alternative for Bond’s Morocco belt. Material consists of “reconstituted leather” and they only have size 38 left in stock. That might not be problem, seeing as 007 wore his long and folded the end back through his belt loop. More options for the Brunello Cucinelli belt can be found over here.
And speaking of Morocco ….
Dune London Brick Sole Chukka Boots in Tan: on sale for £57.00
Over in Comments on the post for J.Crew Kenton alternatives, Steve shared these ones from Dune London. Like most of the options available today, these are a chukka as opposed to a full lace up boot with the high collar. But the colors of the suede and sole are a great match! Sizing is really starting to run low on the Dune London website.
Some stocking stuffers for your favorite Bond-fan
Out of Print Bond Novel T-Shirts: $28.00 to $42.00
Stuck trying to figure out what to give the 007 fanatic in your life? Out of Print now has a series of tees and sweatshirts featuring the titles of some of Fleming’s classic novels. And you get a free pair of “mismatch library socks” with every order!
