“Best Budget Bond Finds” shares the top discoveries from the previous month. Some of these will have already been included in past posts and are deserving of another mention, some will be great alternatives found by the intrepid community, and some are just odds and ends that don’t currently have a home.
I’ve been doing lots of updates to older posts. Which means some good alternatives slipped through the cracks. So this episode of “Best Budget Finds” is for playing catch-up! Let’s get rolling!
A Few New Polo Options
A good budget alternative for the Sunspel Riviera from Target’s house brand. No chest pocket, but it does have the self-collar. And, according to Dappered.com, the 100% cotton fabric feels much nicer than you’d expect at this price. Target has sizes small to 2XL in stock. This is a “standard fit”, so you may want to try a size down for a more fitted look.
Not sure how I missed this one. So a big thanks to AJB007 forum member Superintendent for catching it! The Massimo Dutti’s option for the Tom Ford SPECTRE Polo has the button-less johnny collar and banded hem we want. Obviously that navy is a darker than the original. But the 73% cotton/27% linen blend fabric looks nice. I’ll try and get a better look at this one in-store. In the meantime, sizes small to XL are available on the website.
Just in case someone wants a more expensive alternative for the Tom Ford SPECTRE polo …. Farfetch has Italian sizes 46 to 52 in stock.
And if you want a really expensive alternative for the same polo, AJB007 forum member HalfMonk HalfHitman shared this new one from Bond-brand Orlebar Brown. It’s made in Italy from a 50% silk/50% cotton blend. So “luxurious” might be an appropriate description.
Throwing some of that Connery Bond vibe at you. I’ll have a full review of Aurélien Riviera coming soon. For now, I’ll just say that towelling shirts are very much on-trend right now. And the styling and fabric of this one is really nice! I’ve had mine for about a year, and don’t hesitate to recommend it.
Manifattura Di Genova Polo Shirt in Blue: on sale for $83.00 to $111.00/£54.00 to £72.00
I also have an update for the Casino Royale Venice Polo Shirt post coming very soon. But I want to get this one out there since I don’t know how long it will last. For the price, I still think the Magnoli Clothiers polo ($55.00) is the best option. However this one, available at Yoox, also checks many of the right style boxes. We get a close color in a 90% cotton/10% elastane fabric, the open cuffs and hem, the self-fabric collar, and the hidden button placket. And it’s made in Italy. Shame about that contrasting fabric at the placket. If you happen to be a size medium or large, you can get the lower price here. But if you need a small or an XXL, then you’re stuck with the higher priced option.
Some SPECTRE Inspired Neckwear …
So how brain-dead am I? Well, I shared this great alternative for the Tom Ford knit tie on the AJB007 forum way back in September 2018. And then I promptly forgot it existed. Until one fine person on Instagram recently stated, with absolute certainty, that alternatives for the SPECTRE tie had to be knit silk. And so there’s me, looking at this gentleman’s comment on my IG post, trying to come up with a response, wondering, “Where have a seen a knit one that I liked?” Then the bells went off and I smacked myself upside the head for not remembering this one from the Knottery. Which I share with you now.
Sometimes I ain’t the sharpest knife in the drawer ….
Thanks to AJB007 forum member Timeyswirls for this suggestion. The color may not be perfect. But 100% knitted silk for twenty-five bucks is a pretty good deal!
Can we ever have enough SPECTRE alternatives?
Very techie Cucinelli Chino alternatives! These use Banana Republic’s proprietary 37.5 Technology fabric that’s 55% cotton, 39% polyester and 6% spandex. And embedded in that blend are (and I quote) “active particles derived from volcanic sand to warm you up or cool you down, as needed“. That lighter colored taupe should work well with a paler SPECTRE blazer alternative. Banana Republic currently has sizes 27 to 44 in various inseam lengths in stock.
‘Tis almost the season to be swimming …
Cove Five Maldives Swim Shorts: $85.00
Orlebar Brown still has the Setter model Bond wore in Skyfall (I think this Riviera color is the closest current match?) for £155.00/$245.00. You can also pick them up for £129.00/$165.00 at MatchesFashion in almost all sizes. But if you’d like a solid alternative for about a third of the MSRP, these guys from Cove Five should do the trick. They’re a little longer than the Setters, with a 6 inch inseam. But the rest of the style details are on point. And the fabric is a unique 4-way stretch for a more fitted look.
A Little Something from Bond 25?
Before anyone asks: No, I still don’t know what shorts Bond’s wearing in the Jamaica set photos. But I (and no doubt many others) are working on it. However, I am pretty darn sure that Bond’s using some classic Croakies to keep his Vuarnet 06s secure. Are they most stylish thing to have hanging round your neck? No. But I can tell you from my years living the outdoor life that they really work! Plus #dadcore. Now, if the eyeglass retainers do turn out to be Croakies, I WANT CREDIT FOR THE ID! Ya hear me! Credit is MINE! Cuz I am a small-hearted, petty person who can’t spell the word “Cher” … I mean “Shhar” … whatever …
That time when Bond channeled Thomas Crown …
We all know that finding a good alternative for the Quantum of Solace Tom Ford Harrington ain’t easy. So I’m always happy when a new one pops up. This option from Samuel Windsor may be a little light in color. Plus it has the two button collar and more traditional flap pockets. But there’s no ribbed knit cuffs or hem. And the good news for bigger guys? What appears to be the exact same model is on sale for $59.00 in sizes large to XXL! Seems like a lot of bang for the buck.
