The No Time To Die Long Sleeve Henley

One photo from Empire Magazine. That’s what we’ve got to work with to identify the No Time To Die long sleeve Henley. Since there’s not really much to discuss yet about the context of the photo (and we don’t have enough detail to start looking for the pants), let’s get right to our analysis of the shirt and the alternatives!

Features Wanted for the No Time To Die Long Sleeve Henley
  • Off-white or natural color
  • Slub Cotton (that’s what’s giving the shirt those horizontal striations)
  • Long 3 button placket with tonal buttons
  • Open (non-ribbed knit) cuffs (?). I’m not completely sure about this feature. Honestly, I’m just going on how they look in the photo with the sleeves pushed up.

It’s all about that placket, folks! It’s made using a “standard placket” construction. Which means the fabric has been folded along the outside edge, making it thicker. And it looks like they’ve used some kind of a box stitch re-enforcement at the bottom. The placket is also quite deep, reaching the middle of the chest. As for the buttons, I know there’s been some theories that there’s four of them. Personally, I think there are only three and the top button is located just below the collar.

Daniel Craig James Bond No Time To Die long sleeve Henley
My ridiculously overly complicated way of illustrating why I think this is a 3 button Henley, showing the distance between the buttons and the placement of the top button below the collar. Hey, at least it gives us a better look at the shirt details ….
So what brand do I think Bond’s wearing?

First, we need to consider that this Henley is most likely from the Spring/Summer 2019 season. So it’s probably no longer available. In The Bond Experience vlog from David Zaritsky’s visit to the Billy Reid New York store (you can view that here), there was a quick mention of some of their Henley’s being sent to the No Time To Die production. But I wasn’t able to find any from that brand that match the details we see in the photo.

The other brand that’s being mentioned a lot is Rag & Bone. We know Daniel Craig is a big fan of their Henleys. And there’s little doubt about his influence in the costume department. On top of that, many of the Rag & Bone design details come very close to what Bond’s wearing.

UPDATE!

Thanks to some amazing detective work by AJB007 forum member cederic0011, we think we’ve found the right one: The Rag & Bone Cotton Jersey Henley at Mr. Porter ($150.00/£115.00).

There’s a lot of details that leave me feeling pretty sure this is the one. First, the fabric and color are a great match. Rag & Bone’s current Slub Cotton Henley (see below) comes in a pure white. But this one is an off-white, which I think comes closer to what Bond’s wearing. Second, cederic0011 shared some more detailed screen grabs of the buttons and placket:

In close-up, we can see that the buttons on Bond’s shirt (on the right) clearly have some writing and are sewn on in a diamond pattern. The darker edges are also more noticeable. The buttons on the Rag & Bone Cotton Jersey Henley (on the left) also have those details. Plus the plackets on both shirts have that thicker left-hand edge where they’ve attached it to the body. And cederic0011 was also able to capture that Bond’s Henley has the ribbed knit cuff, so that feature has been confirmed:

So there’s the evidence! I’m feeling about 95% sure this is the right one. Share your thoughts with us in the comments! And another big “Thank You!” to cederic0011 for doing the heavy lifting! Now on to the alternatives!

Best Option for the No Time To Die Long Sleeve Henley
J.Crew Garment Dyed Slub Cotton Henley in Natural: on sale for $34.50

No Time To Die long sleeve Henley affordable alternative

It gets almost all the details right at a great price. Plus they have sizes XS to XXL in stock. Honestly, unless you’re fully committed to finding the original, I don’t know what more we could ask for in an alternative.

Under $100
Theory Essential Slubbed Long Sleeve Henley in Ivory: on sale for $49.97

budget No Time To Die long sleeve Henley

It has the deeper placket, it’s the right color and it’s made from slub cotton, so the fabric has the right look. It also has open (non-ribbed knit) cuffs. So you’ll be able to capture that Bond style when you push up the sleeves. The only problem is that top button. It’s placed right on the collar line. If you can live with that, then the Theory is a heck of a deal. Suggested retail is $115.00. But Nordstrom Rack is offering 57% off and they have sizes small to XXL in stock.

French Connection Slubbed Long Sleeve Henley in Milk: $58.00

budget No Time To Die long sleeve Henley

Another solid option, this time from the main Nordstrom website. This one has the top button placement closer to what we see in the photo. And that curved hem could look pretty cool if you want to wear your Henley untucked. Sizes small to XXL are in stock.

Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Henley in Natural: $68.00

A great suggestion from our Instagram friend Adam Storm (@storm_adam)! Made from 52% 8oz upcycled cotton and 48% recycled polyester, it nails most of the right style details. The placket, button placement, fabric texture and even the cuffs look like solid matches. And apparently it’s so soft it feels like “heavyweight boxing champion holding a kitten”. Yes, that’s a direct quote from the Taylor Stitch product page. Sizes XS to XXL are in stock.

Faherty Brand Slub Cotton Henley in White: $98.00

Something a little different coming to us from Huckberry. The placket isn’t as long as we’d like. But Faherty is committed to using fabrics and manufacturing processes that are “ethically sourced and environmentally sound”. So it seems like a reasonable trade-off if you’re concerned about how and where you clothing is made. The distressed metal buttons are also a nice touch. Huckberry has sizes small to large available on their website. Just FYI: you’ll probably need to give up your email address to Huckberry to see it. But I’ve never had a problem with them spamming me.

Under $200
Merz b. Schwanen Model 102 Button Facing Shirt in Natural: €109.90

Merz b. Schwanen long sleeve Henley

It is almost certainly NOT the shirt that Bond is wearing. But this one is still at the top of my Want List. I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a Merz b. Schwanen Henley since I first wrote about the brand in my June “5 Things I Want” post. The history behind the company is pretty interesting. In 2011, businessman (and lover of vintage Levi’s) Peter Plotnicki decided to make t-shirts the old fashioned way in Germany. Using vintage loop-wheelers and high quality organic cotton, Merz b. Schwanen’s fabric does take a long time to produce. However, that traditional manufacturing process also results in a shirt that’s incredibly soft and durable and has no side seams. If you’re someone that appreciates craftsmanship and likes a little “heritage” behind the label you’re wearing, this is definitely one to check out.

Rag & Bone Slub Cotton Slim Fit Henley in White: $150.00/£115.00

Rag & Bone No Time To Die long sleeve Henley

And to wrap things up, the latest Henley model from Rag & Bone. As I said at the start of this post, the Classic has most of the style details we want. The buttons, with darker outer edge, are the main difference. I’ve linked to Nordstrom above. But you can also order it directly from Rag & Bone.
